There’s laundry tossed on my empty bed
The memory of your smell clouds my head
Your dusty absence makes me sneeze
Why do I counter the pain with pleas?
My four walls scream with words unsaid
-Anonymous Bathroom Poet
I’m trying to retrain my brain to look for the beauty in every place and in every situation, but I never thought I’d find it on a bathroom wall. Public bathrooms seriously gross me out and I try to avoid them at all costs, but when you gotta go, you gotta go! Now I knew I would love a lot of things about Austin, but I never thought one of them would be what I’ve found scribbled on its public bathroom walls. I’ve gotten into the habit of taking pictures of what I find when I’m in one, and I’m usually not disappointed. I’ve even thought of making a little coffee table book of all my glorious anonymous findings.
Has bathroom graffiti always been this interesting? Is it just Austin’s bathroom graffiti? Have I changed? I don’t know, but I do know that these writings have brought a little more joy, creativity, and intrigue to my life. And who couldn’t use more of that?
Love and light,
