2016 Songs of the Summer

This has been a big summer for me. On May 31st, I loaded up my car, went to work in Houston, and then drove to my new apartment in Austin. I spent the last two months looking for work, making friends, and exploring my new home city.

Music always transports me to a different time and place. Here are a few songs that will always bring me right back to my first Austin summer.

Can’t Stop the Feeling by Justin Timberlake

When I first heard this song, I didn’t think much of it. Radio DJ’s kept declaring it the song of the summer and while it had a catchy beat, I disagreed at first. I still don’t know if I’m ready to make that declaration, but I do know I agree with the song’s title. Whenever I hear it, I can’t stop the feeling, and I can’t help but smile and dance. That’s enough to make it a good song to me.

Cheap Thrills by Sia featuring Sean Paul

Apparently this song came out earlier this year, but I didn’t start hearing it until I was driving around Austin this summer. The beat made me feel like I was belly dancing in a faraway land. The words resonated with me as Sia crooned that she didn’t need money to have a good time. I was in a new place with a lot of new expenses looking for a new job, and this song made me forget that stress existed.

This Is What You Came For by Calvin Harris featuring Rihanna

“Baby, this is what you came for
Lightning strikes every time she moves
And everybody’s watching her
But she’s looking at you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, oh, oh”

This song had me at hello. The beat had me grooving, and the lyrics had me imagining locking eyes with a gorgeous Austinite as I danced the night away at a local club. It was that song that I listened to over and over again while I was running, and it kept me totally energized the whole way through.

Send My Love to Your New Lover by Adele

I love, love, love Adele. I think she is incredibly talented. I first heard this song a few days ago on the way home from dinner with a friend. It couldn’t have been more timely. I had just discovered that an ex of mine was in a new relationship. When I found out, I was happy for him and also hoped we had both learned from the mistakes we made with each other. As I heard Adele singing sweetly, “Send my love to your new lover. Treat her better,” I felt like I was singing to him. It helped me to release everything I wanted to convey to him but couldn’t. It was such a reminder of how music can be healing and magical.

Those are my top four unforgettable songs of Summer 2016! What songs will make you remember this summer?

  • Oh my gerd, Gena. We have the exact same music taste. I’ve been listening to that song by Calvin Harris on repeat for the past couple weeks.

I think we have quite a lot in common! Good to know you won’t get annoyed by me playing the same song over and over again! 🙂
